In short: Mumbai University does not have one conversion formula. Engineering results under the Faculty of Technology convert with (7.1 × CGPI) + 12 below CGPI 7 and (7.4 × CGPI) + 12 from 7 upwards, rounded up. Arts, Science and Commerce results under CBCS convert with (CGPA × 7.1) + 11. A CGPI of 8.0 is 72% under the first rule and 67.8% under the second, or 4.2 percentage points apart on the same score.
What are Mumbai University's two CGPA to percentage formulas?
Arts, Science and Commerce use (CGPA × 7.1) + 11. Engineering uses (7.1 × CGPI) + 12 below CGPI 7, and (7.4 × CGPI) + 12 at CGPI 7 and above. Almost every calculator online publishes only the first and applies it to everyone, which is why engineering results so often come out wrong.
Almost every calculator you will find for Mumbai University publishes (CGPA × 7.1) + 11 and applies it to everyone. That formula is real, but it is the one for Arts, Science and Commerce programmes under the choice-based credit system. Engineering has its own, and it has had its own since 2015.
The engineering rule comes from Circular No. Exam./Engg./7-20 of 2015, issued by the examination section's engineering unit at M.J. Phule Bhavan, Vidyanagari. The circular states that a single conversion formula cannot cover the whole range from 4 to 10, so two are used:
- Percentage = (7.1 × CGPI) + 12 where CGPI is below 7
- Percentage = (7.4 × CGPI) + 12 where CGPI is 7 or above
The result is rounded up to the next whole number. The same circular resolved that from the 2015-16 academic year these functions replace the conversion table previously printed on the back of the grade sheet.
So a CGPI of 8.0 converts to 72% for an engineering student and 67.8% for a CBCS student. Using the wrong one costs an engineering student 4.2 percentage points.

CGPI is the Cumulative Grade Performance Index and CGPA is the Cumulative Grade Point Average. Both are the same idea (a credit-weighted average across every completed semester on a 10-point scale) and the difference in name is a faculty convention, not a difference in the mathematics. Only the percentage conversion attached to each differs.
One more check worth ten seconds: Mumbai University prints the conversion rule that governs your result on the reverse of the final grade sheet. Where that printed rule and any calculator disagree, the grade sheet wins.
Why is 63% impossible on an engineering grade sheet?
The engineering formula switches rule at CGPI 7, and the two rules do not meet at the switch. A CGPI of 6.99 gives 62%. A CGPI of exactly 7.00 gives 64%. One hundredth of a grade point is worth 2percentage points, and no CGPI produces a percentage between them.
That is a property of the circular, not a rounding artefact. Both bands add the same 12 points, but the upper band multiplies by 7.4 instead of 7.1, so the line steps up rather than bending. It only matters in one situation, and it matters a lot there: if you are sitting at 6.9-something and an eligibility screen is written at 63% or 64%, clearing CGPI 7.00 moves you across it in a single jump.

Is the formula still in force?
Reporting since January 2026 says Mumbai University no longer treats a single formula as a universal standard, and that the examination section has stepped back from issuing formula-derived percentages for semester figures. This site has not been able to open the underlying circular directly, so that is presented as the current understanding rather than a verified policy statement, and it is the reason the disclaimer on this page is worded strongly.
What has not changed is the practical answer. The formula printed on the back of your grade sheet governs your result. Where a percentage has to be defensible rather than indicative, an issued conversion certificate is the document that settles it.
Last verified: 25 August 2026. The engineering circular is cited from a reproduction of the original examination-section document; the CBCS formula is the one the university publishes in its choice-based credit system guidance.
When an employer or university demands a percentage
Apply to your college's examination cell, not the university. Colleges issue a conversion statement on letterhead, signed by the principal or the controller of examinations, giving your CGPI or CGPA, the formula applied and the resulting percentage. Centralised admission processes and government recruiters ask for exactly this at document verification, and it outranks a self-calculated figure every time.
Take your final grade sheet and every semester mark sheet. If the college declines, the examination section at Vidyanagari handles requests directly, though the college route is normally faster. On the form itself, write the certified percentage and name the formula beside it rather than leaving a bare number for someone to re-derive with the wrong rule.
Why Mumbai's number is lower than your friend's
Mumbai's formulas were never built to line up with the conventions used elsewhere. Here is one CGPA carried through all four:

At 8.0, a Mumbai CBCS student reports 67.8% while a student with the same score at an AICTE-convention university reports 76% (8.2 points higher) and one at a ×10 university reports 80%, 12.2points higher. That spread is why a Mumbai graduate can miss a 70% eligibility screen a classmate elsewhere clears on identical work.

If a form asks for a percentage and you are competing against students from other universities, say which formula produced yours. It is the difference between looking like a weaker candidate and being one.
