What Does Your Percentage Tell You?

Your percentage isn’t just a number for documents. It determines your eligibility for higher studies, scholarships, and jobs. Most Indian government jobs require at least 50 to 60 percent. Foreign universities usually want 70 percent or above. Check our CGPA vs GPA guide if you’re applying abroad.

The CGPA to Percentage Formula, Explained Simply

The formula to convert CGPA to percentage depends on your grading scale. For a 10-point scale: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For a 5-point scale: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 5) × 100. For a 4-point GPA: Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4) × 100. The multiplier 9.5 is set by AICTE guidelines for Indian universities.

10-Point Scale

CGPA × 9.5

Example: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%

Used by: Most Indian universities (AICTE standard)

5-Point Scale

(CGPA ÷ 5) × 100

Example: 3.8 ÷ 5 × 100 = 76%

Used by: Some state universities

4-Point Scale (US GPA)

(GPA ÷ 4) × 100

Example: 3.2 ÷ 4 × 100 = 80%

Used by: US and international universities

Step-by-Step Example: Converting 7.8 CGPA to Percentage

1. Identify your grading scale.
Your marksheet says 7.8 on a 10-point scale. You’re on the standard AICTE system.

2. Apply the formula.
Percentage = 7.8 × 9.5 =74.1%

3. Interpret your grade.
74.1% puts you in the
First Class
category. You’re eligible for most graduate programs and government job applications.

What Does Your Percentage Actually Mean?

A percentage alone doesn’t tell you much until you know what doors it opens. Here’s what each grade class means for your academic and career options in India.

Distinction

75% – 100%

Eligible for all PG programs, government scholarships (NTS, merit-based), MBA or MS abroad at most universities, and GATE or UPSC competitive exams.

First Class

60% – 74.9%

Eligible for most PG programs, government jobs (most require 55 to 60 percent), competitive exams, and private sector entry-level positions.

Second Class

50% – 59.9%

Eligible for some PG programs, many private sector jobs, and state government jobs. Check eligibility per exam notification.

Pass Class

40% – 49.9%

Eligible for basic employment and some certificate programs. Most competitive exams and PG admissions require 50 percent or above.

Fail

Below 40%

Reappear in exams or attempt improvement exams. Check your university’s supplementary exam schedule for next steps.

Note: Eligibility criteria vary by institution and exam. Always verify with the official notification of the program you’re applying to. These are general guidelines based on common Indian university standards.

Frequently Asked Questions About CGPA to Percentage

8.0 CGPA equals 76% on a standard 10-point scale using the formula 8.0 × 9.5 = 76. This falls in the First Class grade band. However, VTU and Anna University students use CGPA × 10, which would give 80% for the same score.

7.5 CGPA equals 71.25% on a 10-point scale (7.5 × 9.5). This is considered a First Class grade by most Indian universities. If your university uses a 10× multiplier (like VTU), 7.5 CGPA equals 75%.

Mumbai University uses a different formula: Percentage = (CGPA × 7.1) + 11. So a CGPA of 8.0 gives you (8.0 × 7.1) + 11 = 67.8%. This is unique to MU and differs from the standard AICTE formula. Always use our Mumbai University CGPA calculator for accurate results.

No, CGPA and percentage are not the same thing. CGPA is a grade point average on a fixed scale (usually 10, 5, or 4 points). Percentage is the equivalent score out of 100. You convert one to the other using a formula. Most Indian university marksheets show only CGPA, so students need to convert it for job applications, further studies, and competitive exam forms.

10.0 CGPA equals a range of 95% to 100% on a standard 10-point scale (10 × 9.5 = 95). Since CGPA rounds scores, a 10 may represent any score between 95% and 100%. This is the highest possible CGPA in most Indian universities.

For CBSE Class 10, the formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. The CBSE itself recommends this multiplier. So a CGPA of 9.4 equals 89.3%, and a CGPA of 10 equals 95%. This formula has been officially used since CBSE switched to the CGPA system.

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your grade average for one semester only. CGPA is the average of all your SGPAs across all completed semesters. So if you have four semesters with SGPAs of 7.5, 8.0, 7.8, and 8.2, your CGPA is roughly 7.875. Use our SGPA to percentage calculator or SGPA to CGPA converter for quick calculations.

To find a percentage from raw marks, use this formula: Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100. For example, if you scored 450 out of 600, your percentage is (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%. Use our marks to percentage calculator to handle multiple subjects at once.

Yes. The common conversion is: GPA (4-point) = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. So 8.0 CGPA becomes a 3.2 GPA. But foreign universities often have their own conversion policies, so check with the specific institution. Our CGPA to GPA calculator gives a quick estimate. Always confirm with the official WES evaluation for visa or admission purposes.

Most Indian government jobs require a minimum of 50% to 60% in your graduation. Prestigious roles like IAS, IPS, and central government services don’t specify a minimum percentage but expect strong academic performance. Always check the specific job notification. A First Class (60% or above) keeps most doors open.

6.5 CGPA equals 61.75% on a 10-point scale (6.5 × 9.5). This is a First Class grade. If you’re applying for graduate programs that require 60% as a minimum, a 6.5 CGPA meets the standard.

No. The AICTE recommends CGPA × 9.5, but universities are free to adopt their own formulas. VTU, Anna University, and MAKAUT use CGPA × 10. Mumbai University uses (CGPA × 7.1) + 11. Always check your university’s academic regulations or use our university-specific calculators to get the right answer.
